“Then Jesus said to them, ‘A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.’ These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.” (John 12:35-36 NKJV)
I am always amazed at the clarity of scripture – “line upon line and precept upon precept, here a little and there a little”. The Scriptures speaks so clearly and yet, people of old (and even many living today) failed to see the simple truths. Spiritual things are truly spiritually discerned. The main ingredient which seemed to be missing from both groups is the willingness to believe. Refusing to believe is a convenient way of denying the existence of something or someone; but it does not change the truth – one such truth is, “if you walk in light you will not stumble”.
In speaking of His death and subsequent departure from Earth, Jesus indirectly responded to His listeners’ question: “Who is the Son of Man?” by advising them to “walk in the light”. He needed no response and there was no need to continue the conversation. Had they been walking in the light that He gently sheds for their feet, they wouldn’t have asked that question. Many had followed Jesus on several of His journeys, yet they didn’t believe His claim to be the Son of God. They accepted most of His teachings; but pride still kept them from accepting His Heavenly claim. Somehow, I think they knew, but they did not believe. You see, believing is normally followed by change. In several teachings before this penultimate Passover Feast, Jesus had told His listeners that He would only be with them for a short time, and then He would return to the One who sent Him. He told them that He was the light of the world and if they followed Him they would have the light of life. The devil knew this fact to be truth, yet he filled the listeners’ hearts with unbelief – his only aim was to keep them from believing in the One who was there to save them from darkness.
In his commentary on this passage, Matthew Henry stated that, “The people drew false notions from the Scriptures, because they overlooked the prophecies that spoke of Christ's sufferings and death. Our Lord warned them that the light would not long continue with them, and exhorted them to walk in it, before the darkness overtook them. Those who would walk in the light must believe in it, and follow Christ's directions. But those who have not faith, cannot behold what is set forth in Jesus, lifted up on the cross, and must be strangers to its influence as made known by the Holy Spirit: they find a thousand objections to excuse their unbelief.”
How is your belief in God’s words? Are you walking in light or in darkness? To walk in the light means to believe and obey His teachings: “line upon line and precept upon precept.” No man can change God’s words, and traditions cannot do away with His specific instructions. You cannot believe some parts of His word and refuse to believe other parts. It’s all or nothing. Those who choose not to believe are termed as ‘the wicked’. The wisest man said “the way of the wicked is like deep darkness, they do not know what makes them stumble”. Also, Jeremiah noted that the path of those who choose to walk in darkness will become slippery and they will fall. It’s a fact: “Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble for they see the world’s light.” (John 11:9). And it is equally true; when you walk in the light of His word, what a glory He sheds on your way. As you do His will, He’ll abide with you. Your path will then be as a shining light, which shines more and more unto a perfect day. There’s so much to gain when you step out of darkness and walk with God in the light of His word. Will you?
Holy Father, the only way for us to be happy in Jesus is for us to trust and obey. Please help us believe Your words and walk in the light it sheds for our feet. May You keep us forever in the radiance of Your light, is our prayer, in Jesus’ name, amen.
