“And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:” (John 16:8 NKJV)

Should it become necessary for you to lose one of your senses, which would you feel more comfortable loosing? For me personally, unwillingly, I would rather to give up taste by savoring past experiences. It would be very arduous to go without hearing and sight. Physically, our eyes are said to be the light to our souls; and when our eyes have become very dim or blinded, our soul is engulfed in darkness. But what’s even more important than our physical sight is our spiritual sight.

Spiritual sight is the Holy Spirit’s conviction to our conscience, helping us to recognize our state of sinfulness. I love to call that process the eyes of conscience. You see, irrespective of how morally good many of us are, in the eyes of God, our righteousness is really just filthy rags. By our good works, we are unable to measure up to God’s standard of righteousness. Therefore, we need the eyes of conscience to see our real status.

Why so? Before the Holy Spirit can do anything else for us, He must convict us of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. He will repeatedly impress on our conscience our sinfulness with the hope of awakening in our souls the need of a Savior. However, if we ignore His pleas, we run the risk of dimming the eyes of conscience; and may plunge our souls in total spiritual darkness.

What can I do? What can you do? When we hear His call, let us listen with an obedient heart! Also, let us recognize our need of the Savor; by asking Him to wash the eyes of our consciences with spiritual eye salves. Then we will not get puffed up with our own filthy rags of righteousness. If we remain this way, we can be certain that the eyes our conscience will not dim nor be blinded. The Holy Spirit will always be with us awakening our need a Savior and doing many other things for and with us.

We thank You Heavenly Father for eyes to see and ears to hear. Please help us to listen and obey Your voice. This is our prayer, in Jesus’ name, amen.
