"Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin." (Romans 3:19-20 NKJV)

Ignorance is no excuse for breaking earthly laws. The principles behind most earthly laws were derived from God’s great law, His Ten Commandments and in particular, the last six precepts which controls behavior towards each other. Under English Family Law, it is a legal obligation for adult children to financially support their parents. Also, when a third party enters a marriage (adultery), the offended spouse can successfully sue that third party for interfering in his/her marriage. No offending party can successfully claim ignorance of the law.

In God’s government, all are required to abide by the principles of His Ten Commandments a.k.a. the Law. God designed the Law in such a way that it stops anyone from making excuses. His Law acts like a mirror! It highlights unacceptable and punishable behavior. It shows our obligation towards God and our fellowmen. In summary, it calls us to love the Lord with all our hearts, mind and soul, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is more than a set of rules, which is impossible, in our own strength, to follow. It should be viewed as a set of loving instructions, to make one’s life happier and more fulfilling.

While you could be made right by following earthly laws, it is not so in God’s government. No one can keep God’s Law to be saved. Not at all - it is an impossible feat! On the contrary, we obey God’s Law because we have been saved by Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. His gift of grace empowers us to be obedient. Therefore, when we look into the ‘Mirror’ and behold our shortcomings, with repentant hearts we go to God confessing our sins and request Heaven’s help to remain obedient. We have no more excuses for breaking God’s Law because provision has been made for us to be obedient. What is your love response to God’s grace?

Our Heavenly Father, thank You for Your provision for all aspects of our lives. Thank You for grace that empowers us to be obedient to all Your laws. Please help us to love you with all our hearts, mind and soul and to love our neighbors as ourselves. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
