That I May Know Him

That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made comfortable unto His death; (Philippians 3:10)
 

I smiled at this morning's text as it has always been the desire of my heart to know Him. In my pursuit to know Him (and I still have not yet attained) I have discovered that it is more than knowing Him through His words - it is also a full surrender, a relationship, allowing His will to take precedence over your life. Let's look more closely:

Knowing Him and the power of His resurrection: this calls for a total trusting relationship, fully believing that God can keep you from falling, that He can keep you spotless, blameless unto His coming. We do not have to yield our bodies as instruments of sin.

Knowing Him and the fellowship of His sufferings: like the three Hebrew boys, like Job, like Abraham, we can know that He will deliver, and if He chooses not to deliver, He will be with us in our fiery trials. He will take us through. The fellowship of knowing that He will never leave us nor forsake us is so assuring, so we can obey His instructions with a willing heart.

Knowing Him will make us comfortable unto His death: Like Peter, and many heroes of faith, we will have the assurance that death is only a temporary sleep and we will see His face when we awake. We can rest assured that if our God permit us to die, it is good and He will be glorified.

That I may know Him - not just about Him ... The Jewish leaders knew of Him but they did not know Him = that's why they missed it when He came to live among them. Judas, though one of His disciples knew what He could do, but did not know who Jesus really was. Saul, an ardent Jew knew what God's requirements were but did not know God. God had to change Saul's outlook so that he could look upward.

Do I know Him, truly know that I can trust Him instead of worrying about tomorrow? Do I know that His answer to all His promises are "yes" and I can claim them with the full understanding and faith that He has already answered? Do I know His voice when He speaks in my ear saying, "this is the way, walk ye in it"? Do you know Him?

We can know Him by allowing His words to lead us in a deeper prayer and witnessing life with Him. Then we can be assured that He will be with us no matter what fire we go through.

Dear God, thank You for the opportunity to know You, not just of You. Thank You for the assurance that You will be with us always. Help us to learn of You and to commune with You often so that we can know Your will for our lives, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Why were you afraid?” And to us His question is the same. When we take our eyes off Jesus and put in on the problems around us, we will loose our peace and our souls! The devil knows that if he can get us distracted from our real mission, even when we become over zealous about good things, he was in the winning seat. Let us put away all distractions that rob our time with God, that take our peace.
