But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God (Romans 2:5)
From humble beginnings God raised him up to be king over His people. All was well at first and this reign held the promise of great success. But alas!! The evils of his rebellion and stubborn heart were the beginning of his downfall.
Saul's story is not unique. Pharaoh, king of Egypt was summoned to let God's people go. In his pomp and pride, he rebelled against several pleadings of God. He was so stubborn and set in his way that not even the death of his heir could keep him from honoring his forced promise to let God's people go.
It is true, stubbornness is like witchcraft! Saul and Pharaoh behaved as if they were bewitched!! They held fast their rebellion against God to their eternal doom! They missed the opportunity to alter their destiny! Others didn't.
There are many who accepted and heeded the call. Their story ended differently-they altered their destiny. Samuel heard the call and in obedience responded. He wasn't the only one. Moses accepted the challenge. Abraham obeyed, confident that God would prepare Himself a lamb! David responded with contrition of heart and in full surrender to God cried out for cleansing and mercy!
Yes, their destiny was changed and it is recorded in the chapter of faith as a memorial and motivator for us to follow. Today, He still speaks. But many are so stubborn! Many refuse to change. Many are making their own punishment greater and greater. Am I one? Have I harden my heart like Pharaoh?
God still speaks through various means. Am I listening? What is He saying to me? How is my attitude toward His message? How will I respond? The decision I make will alter my destiny-- in one way or another.
Do not rebel or harden your heart like Saul or Pharaoh. Be like Samuel who said, "Speak Lord, your servant is listening." Be like David, in total surrender to God, pleaded for the retention of The Holy Spirit in his life. Be receptive to God's voice and give it all to Him. Why treasure up wrath against the day of wrath? Avoid the punishment. Alter your destiny!
You still speak Father, I know Your voice. Grant me a receptive heart to hear and obey Your instructions for my life. I give it all to You Father and through Your Holy Spirit, please continue to lead and guide me along the way. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
