"So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit." (John 19:30 NKJV)
Finally! Mission accomplished! It is finished! Jesus did it!
He was victorious where Adam failed. He showed us that a sinless life is possible while living with the presence of sin. And now, even though He was dead, His final words: “It is finished!” are the words of victory. He triumphed over the devil and his angels. Jesus won! They gave Him sour wine as the last drink, but that didn’t sour His mood. Victory was in sight. He was at the finish line and in a triumphant voice shouted: “It is finished!”
But what exactly was finished? Do you think it was just the insults, the beatings, the slaps to and spit in His face, the blood draining from His side as death approach, and His life on Earth ended? Yes, those were finished; but there’s more. Jesus came on a mission to reveal His Father to us; to bridge the gap between God and man; to bring an end to the daily sacrifice; and to break the power of sin over our lives! Yes, His mission on Earth was finished! But my mind tells me that His words were also a warning to Satan telling the wicked rascal that he was finished!
Jesus’ words held so much meaning for the sinner, for the sinner saved by grace, and for whosoever will. New hope had dawned. It is really possible to live above sin. I can be perfect just as my Father in Heaven is perfect! I am motivated to try. I can do it. Jesus showed me how. Yes, I don’t have to allow sin to have dominion over me. I have chosen a different master. I am not destined to be forever bound by the power of sin. Sin’s power is broken! Praise the Lord! I am free!
As I daily face my crucibles, I am comforted that the victory is already won. My victory over sin and its besetments is assured. Sin no longer has power over me. I have been given a new lease on life. Yes, it is finished, the battle is over and Jesus is Lord of my life.
How about you? Jesus’ victory was for you too. Is it forever settled in your heart; and is Jesus your one and only true Master? What are the battles that you face daily; the besetting sins that still dogged your every step? You can claim Jesus’ victory over your life. Tell the devil that it is finished, and Jesus is Lord. Step out of the chains that bind you, the evil practices that control your life and declare to the devil that his power is broken. Let Jesus’ words of triumph be your mantra. Tell the devil, tell the abuser in your life, tell the one that held you in sin, tell your problems that it is finished! Yes, let nothing or no one keep you away from sweet communion with your Lord. Let Jesus have first place in your life because if He is not master of all, He is not master at all. Let Him hold up your hand, as you proclaim to your world that it is finished!
Oh my Father, it is finished and forever settled in Heaven. Thank You for Jesus’ victory. I am assured that I will live and not die eternally. Jesus did it for me. His mission to Earth was to save me and I am so forever grateful for His grace. Keep me faithful I pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.
