Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (Gal 6:7,8)
“The pain still lingers”, she confided. She allowed herself to again believe; to trust; to hope; that finally, she would have that perfect ending. She honestly believed that the right seeds were being sown in the garden of her marriage and the harvest would be a bountiful well ordered family. But alas! The deception continues and her once beautiful garden (or so she thought) was unraveling the plants of bad seeds that have finally come to maturity.
The above is so commonplace is society today. Many families are being destroyed because of the careless actions of at least one family member. So many husband or wife, and sometimes both, are selfishly sowing to the flesh, knowing very well that the harvest will be corrupted. Yet they stubbornly continued, not caring for the lives that are being destroyed in the process. They disregarded the truth and held fast to the belief of the day “take care of number one”.
Paul cautioned all ‘farmers’ that life will not conceal seeds sown because the physics of life state that whatever is sown will grow. In light of this, he reminded that care should be taken in the sowing stage because you will only get what you put in. And what’s even more frightening is just as sown seeds produce fruits after their kind, the process of reproducing – be it good or evil - continues.
My favorite author is on point when she stated that: “Every seed sown produces a harvest of its kind. So it is in human life. We all need to sow the seeds of compassion, sympathy, and love; for we shall reap what we sow. Every characteristic of selfishness, self-love, self-esteem, every act of self-indulgence, will bring forth a like harvest. He who lives for self is sowing to the flesh, and of the flesh he will reap corruption. God destroys no man. Everyone who is destroyed will have destroyed himself. Everyone who stifles the admonitions of conscience is sowing the seeds of unbelief, and these will produce a sure harvest.” (EGW COL pg 84). I concur.
God has given many a beautiful family to tend and nurture. Yet, in their obstinate behavior, many have forever destroyed the beauty God placed in their guardianship. Like Pharaoh of old, they have sown the seed of disbelief – disbelieving God’s words and His prophets. Just as how Pharaoh’s resistance continued until he looked upon the devastation of his land; the death of his firstborn and all firstborn of Egypt; the waters of the red sea going over his army in total annihilation; so are many husbands, many wives, who have hardened their hearts in destroying such priceless blessing God placed in their laps.
Pharaoh’s rejection of God’s first warning was the first seed sown leading to his destruction and the destruction of many innocent others. It’s true! God is not mocked. Whatever you sow you will reap. The same is true for all living today. The seeds you sow today will germinate and bear fruits. Will the seeds you sow destroy you and your loved ones and all you’ve worked for or will they be a harvest that you are proud of? Remember: seeds that are sown will grow.
Our Father in Heaven, we thank you for the reminder that our actions can be seeds that produces a bountiful harvest of good. Please help us to choose to serve you in making good decisions that will honor you, thus securing our lives and the lives of our loved ones. This is our prayer, in Jesus’ name, amen.
